Basement media room in Nashua, NH with a metallic epoxy floor

How the look is made

A metallic floor starts as a clear or tinted epoxy loaded with fine mica and metallic pigments. While it is still wet, the installer works it with rollers, brushes, sprayers and sometimes a little solvent to move the pigment around. The particles settle and catch the light at different angles, which creates the swirls, ripples, veins and pools that make these floors so striking. Because the effect depends on hand technique, every floor is one of a kind. We show you photos and real sample boards before we start so you have a clear idea of the range of looks.

Spaces that suit a metallic floor

Metallic finishes work best indoors, where the concrete is protected from road salt and heavy tires. Finished basements are the most common request around here, especially media rooms, game rooms, home bars and gyms. Many older homes have basement floors with stains, old paint and patches that look rough under carpet or tile. A metallic coating turns that slab into a feature. We also install metallic floors in salons, retail stores, restaurants, office lobbies and the converted mill spaces that many local companies call home.

Basement moisture comes first

Basements are where moisture problems show up. Slabs that were poured without a vapor barrier, as many older ones were, can push moisture up through the concrete. That moisture can cause blisters or a cloudy finish if it is not managed. We test every basement slab before quoting a metallic system. When readings are high, we put down a moisture-mitigating primer first. We also check for efflorescence and work around sump pits and radon fans so they stay accessible.

Popular color choices

  • Silver and charcoal: a cool, modern look that goes with gray furniture and steel.
  • Pearl and white: bright and clean, great for small basements that need more light.
  • Copper and bronze: warm tones that pair with brick, wood beams and leather.
  • Deep blue or black: dramatic, glossy floors for bars, theaters and lounges.

We can blend two or three colors on the same floor and adjust the pattern from subtle ripples to bold, marble-like veining.

Layers and finish

After grinding and repair, we lay down a primer, then a solid base color that gives the metallic layer a uniform background. The metallic layer goes on next and gets worked by hand. Finally, a clear top coat protects the surface from scratches and adds either a high gloss or a softer satin sheen. In heavy-traffic rooms we may use a tougher urethane top coat. For extra grip near a bar or stairs, a fine grit can be added to the top layer.

What to expect on site

A basement metallic floor usually takes two to four days, depending on size and repairs. We need the room empty and the heat on, because the resin needs a stable temperature to cure smoothly. Odor is low with the products we use, but we still set up ventilation and close off the stairway. Light foot traffic is usually fine after a day, and furniture can go back after a few more days of curing.

Durability and care

A metallic floor is tough, but it is also glossy, so fine scratches can show if grit gets ground in. Use felt pads under chair and table legs, put mats at entrances and sweep with a soft broom or dust mop. Clean with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. If the top coat dulls in a busy area after several years, we can lightly sand and recoat it without redoing the whole floor.

Planning your project

Bring us a few photos you like, along with photos of the space, and we will talk through colors and patterns at the estimate. We can also pair a metallic floor with a matching epoxy bar top. If the room is a workshop rather than a lounge, a flake floor may be the better fit.

Lighting changes everything

Metallic pigment reacts strongly to light. Recessed cans, LED strips and daylight from a walkout door all bring out different parts of the pattern. During the estimate we look at your lighting plan and suggest colors that will look their best in that room, day and night.
